Originally developed as a GBA port of Rayman 2, late in development, the game was enriched with elements from Rayman 3 to position it as a standalone experience. Early versions still referenced Rayman 2 level names, hinting at its origins. Beyond the GBA, the game has been adapted for mobile phones and was also ported to the Nokia N-Gage, broadening its reach.

Set either between the events of Rayman 2 and Rayman 3 or as an alternative sequel, the story kicks off with Rayman confronting Globox over swallowing a Dark Lum while attempting to save the Teensies. As Rayman seeks a cure, Globox runs away, prompting concerns about his safety. Meanwhile, the sinister Admiral Razorbeard plots to capture Globox and harness the Dark Lum's power to boost his strength and resurrect the formidable Grolgoth, threatening Rayman's world with chaos.
